Arts Award for Newton Road School
Way back in September, Mrs Radd went on a course so that she could become an Arts Award Adviser – this means that she is now qualified to assess the work of children who are aiming to achieve the first two levels of Trinity College’s Arts Awards. These are called ‘Discover and Explore’. She then registered Newton Road School as an Arts Award Centre.
Arts Award is an accredited scheme that is offered and moderated by Trinity College, London. It caters for children and young people up to the age of 25 and aims to help young people experience and evaluate a range of art forms.
‘Arts Award Club’ has been running at Newton Road since January. So far, we have looked at visual arts, painting and drawing techniques, musical composition and the work of M.C. Escher. We will also be recording our responses to visitors and performances we experience in school such as The Whole Child Project and the author, Olaf Falafel.
Mrs Radd said, ’The children have been very open minded about the arts we have explored and are becoming adept at explaining their reactions to various art forms. I have been very impressed at their resilience when trying new things and their outcomes have been fantastic!’
Before too long, Newton Road will congratulating its first Arts Award Graduates – these young people could be the composers, artists or art critics of the future!
